As of mid-August 2025, there are more than 7,000 known cases of a particular mosquito-borne disease in southern China. Chikungunya is a infectious disease that spans several continents.

An expert from the University of Oxford explains that this is the first time such disease “establishes” in mainland China. The virus is now spreading quickly, as there is “no pre-existing immunity” among the Chinese people.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation reminds people, especially those who are going to returning to the UK from China soon, to be careful about this serious medical issue. Wearing long sleeves, repelling the mosquitos, sleeping under a mosquito-net are the advice given to the public.
