Charles III, the King of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth realms, has delivered a speech at the United States Congress. He is the second monarch to do this after his mother Elizabeth II in 1991. The speech is part of a royal visit to the United States to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence. He and Queen Camilla are staying the night at a state dinner at the White House.

Charles referenced the recent attack at the Washington Hilton during a WCHA dinner which was believed to be an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, stating that “acts of violence will never succeed.” He reflected on the United States’ independence from the United Kingdom and the founding fathers’ democratic values. He called for more support to the defence of Ukraine, and praised the AUKUS security pact and said that he was “proud” to be Australia’s head of state.

Charles noted that this was actually his 20th visit to the United States, but his first since becoming monarch. A formal ceremony was given to Charles and Camilla earlier today, with Donald Trump discussing United States independence while acknowledging the “moral courage” that was given to them by the United Kingdom. Trump would say after the speech that it was “a great speech” and confessed he was jealous.
