The U.S. Department of State has announced a significant partnership, pledging over $800 million to the World Food Programme (WFP) and more than $218 million to the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF). This crucial funding arrives at a critical juncture, with global hunger reaching unprecedented levels, humanitarian needs escalating, and resources dwindling. This initiative follows the U.S.’s commitment of approximately $4 billion to UN humanitarian operations in recent months.
Lifeline for Hungry Families
The contribution to WFP will bolster life-saving food and nutrition operations for over 38 million people across at least 37 countries. WFP Acting Executive Director Carl Skau described the support as a “lifeline to reach people on the brink of famine, provide nutrition support for mothers and children, and prevent millions from falling into extreme hunger.” The funds will enable WFP to deliver aid swiftly and effectively through its global logistics network, pre-positioned food stocks, and data-driven targeting.
Disaster and Emergency Response
A key focus of the support is disaster preparedness and rapid response in countries vulnerable to devastating natural disasters, particularly in the Latin America and Caribbean, Asia, and Indo-Pacific regions. The funding will also support life-saving emergency response and nutrition activities in complex, protracted humanitarian crises. Skau highlighted planned support examples, including expanding hunger-fighting operations in Lebanon, increasing cash assistance to displaced families in Haiti, and scaling up food and logistics supply lines in areas affected by the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Importance of International Support
Skau expressed hope for broader international backing, stating, “We hope the international community will also support this commitment. Together, we can prevent hunger and save millions of lives.” WFP emphasized the vital role of bilateral funding during a time when “extreme hunger destabilizes communities, leading to displacement, insecurity, economic loss, and untold hardship.”
Record Partnership for Children
The 12-month UNICEF partnership aims to accelerate the delivery of life-saving assistance to children affected by natural disasters and complex crises, especially those suffering from severe malnutrition or wasting. According to UNICEF, this represents one of the largest humanitarian initiatives focused on child survival and well-being. UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell stated, “This investment will help us reach children faster with life-saving aid, strengthen local systems and partnerships, and expand access to critical nutrition services for the most at-risk children.”
Targeted Investments and Malnutrition Treatment
The partnership will support emergency operations and major humanitarian crises across all UNICEF regions, with targeted investments directed towards Ethiopia, Myanmar, and Ukraine. Through its nutrition component, UNICEF anticipates screening over 4.4 million children for malnutrition and providing treatment for approximately 950,000 children with severe wasting. The investment will also bolster global supply chains for ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) and improve access to treatment in the most challenging operating environments. Beyond direct aid, the partnership will also support global efforts to enhance humanitarian worker efficiency, strengthen local leadership, and improve coordination.
