A landslide struck western Sudan on 31 August 2025. The landslide destroyed an entire village in the western region of Darfur, in the remote Marra mountains. The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM) said on monday that over 1,000 people were killed in the landslide, leaving only one survivor in the village of Tarasin. The movement said that the village had been “completely levelled to the ground”.
The landslide was triggered by days of heavy rain, which occured under the last week of August. The Sudan Liberation Movement has made appeals to the United Nations and other international organisations for assistance in recovering and retrieving the bodies.
