Today, United States President Donald Trump signed an executive order at the White House adding “Department of War” as a secondary name for the Department of Defense and “Secretary of War” as a secondary title of the Secretary of Defense. The name and title had previously been used until the National Security Act of 1947 which formed the basis for the National Military Establishment (NME), later renamed the Department of Defense. Since only an act of the United States Congress can officially change the name and titles of US agencies, the formal titles using Department of Defense will remain in addition to the new secondary titles and names.
President Trump had previously discussed the idea internally and externally. It was originally confirmed on Thursday by Fox News, citing a White House official, quickly confirmed by other outlets. “I don’t want to be defense only. We want defense, but we want offense, too,” Trump said. “As Department of War, we won everything.”
