Donald Trump has slammed Australian journalist John Lyons, who works for the Australian documentary television program Four Corners, for “hurting Australia” during an interview with him. Lyons had been asking Trump questions about his wealth and personal business, asking how much wealthier he had become since he was re-inaugurated as president, and whether he should be conducting personal business in office.
Trump responded by claiming that his children are running the business, and after Lyons told him he worked for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), he exclaimed, “In my opinion, you are hurting Australia very much right now. And they want to get along with me. You know, your leader is coming over to see me very soon. I’m going to tell him about you. You set a very bad tone. You can set a nicer tone. Quiet.”
Trump’s commentary is the first official confirmation from him that he will meet Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese next week as part of a UN general assembly trip. Albanese has long attempted to arrange a meeting with Trump, with a planned meeting at the G20 summit in June suddenly abandoned.
