the final penny was pressed in Philadelphia Wednesday marking the end of the production of the coin first introduced in 1793. The coin which lasted 232 years finally ended primarily due to the penny costing 3.7 cents to produce and due to the lack of purpose a 1 cent coin has in the modern economy
The Treasury dept. announced the discontinuation of the penny by 2026 in May. The penny will still be legal tender.
