Indian Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were detained by Delhi Police on Monday morning while they were taking out a procession towards the Election Commission office in Delhi.
The opposition India Alliance had planned a protest march on Monday, raising allegations of voter fraud in Bihar’s SIR and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Accordingly, the march began from the Parliament building towards the Election Commission building at around 11:30 am today.
Leaders of the India Alliance including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Sharad Pawar participated in the march. Opposition MPs from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha also joined the march.
Delhi Police said that no formal permission was taken for the procession. Later, at around 1:45 pm, Indian media reported that some people, including Rahul and Priyanka, had been detained.
The Sharik India alliance, including the Congress, has serious objections to the conditions set by the EC regarding the creation of a new voter list and eligibility to vote in the Indian state of Bihar.
The Election Commission has said that Aadhaar card and voter ID, which were previously considered sufficient to vote in the state of Bihar, will no longer be sufficient; instead, voters will be asked to provide any of 11 types of proof, such as birth certificate, passport, forest rights certificate or government education certificate.
