On Tuesday, geologists and mathematicians are celebrating as the date, when written in DD/MM/YY form, and then multiplied by a thousand, is the distance, in feet, through the Earth. The Earth has a diameter of 12,742 kilometers, or approximately 7,910 miles. The exact distance varies by 20-30 feet depending on the location, as the Earth is almost, but not quite, a perfect sphere. There are 5,280 feet in a mile, and multiplying 7,900 (a lower estimate) by 5,280 gives a distance of 41,712,000 feet. However, using an upper estimate of 7,950 miles, this translates to 7,950 × 5,280 = 41,976,000 feet.
