A 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan at 23:47 local time on September 1st, 2025. The quake struck 27 kilometers east of the city of Jalalabad and hit villages and towns in the Kunar province. The earthquake was one of Afghanistan’s deadliest in a decade.
The government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid says that over 800 people have died and over 2,500 people has been injured by the earthquake, though the death toll is not clear and could change. Almost all of the deaths occured in the Kunar province, though another dozen was killed and a couple of hundred injured in the Nangarhar Province. The quake was felt in both the capital city of Kabul, 140 kilometers away and in Pakistan, and it was 8 km deep. The United Nations said that about 12,000 were directly affected by the quake. In the Nurgal district region, in the Kunar province, villages have been partially or completely destroyed.
The earthquakes epicentre was in a mountainous region, which makes it hard for medical aid to arrive, as most roads are blocked. Afghan Taliban spokesman Mujahid said hours after the earthquake that volunteers had provided aid to the affected areas and conducted rescue operations.
