A series of active weather systems is currently impacting New Zealand, with the South Island bearing the brunt through at least Thursday, October 23. Air New Zealand reported at least seven flights affected, including Dunedin Invercargill. Additional delays and diversions occurred at other South Island airports due to the high winds. Travelers are advised to check airline updates before heading to airports. Hundreds of homes are without electricity, particularly in areas like Mosgiel, Dunedin, and parts of Southland. Aurora Energy and Wellington Electricity crews are responding, with warnings of further outages from falling branches and debris. In the Wellington region, over 1,000 properties were impacted earlier in the day.
State Highway 1 reopened after a truck trailer overturned and blocked the route, but orange strong wind warnings remain for Fiordland, Southland, and Stewart Island until noon. High-sided vehicles are at risk, and ferry services like East by West have restricted timetables or cancellations. Emergency callouts have increased due to downed trees and structural damage.
Heavy rain warnings cover the West Coast and parts of Otago, with potential for localized flooding. Snow has settled near Queenstown, adding to hazards. A red-level wind warning was briefly in effect for Wellington, highlighting risks to life and property.
