Incident in Hillside, Illinois (December 17, 2025)
A tragic multi-vehicle crash occurred yesterday in Hillside, a western suburb of Chicago, resulting in the death of a pedestrian and injuries to two police officers, among others.
Details of the Crash:
The incident began when a 73-year-old driver in a Genesis SUV struck a Hillside police squad car on Butterfield Road near LaVerne Road.
The SUV continued driving, colliding with additional vehicles along Butterfield Road, crossing multiple lanes and Wolf Road.
It then entered the parking lot of a Walgreens store, where it struck a 78-year-old male pedestrian who was entering the lot (some reports describe him using a walker).
The pedestrian was transported to Loyola University Medical Center but was pronounced dead.
The two officers in the struck squad car sustained injuries (described as back and neck pain) but are expected to recover. Despite their injuries, they rushed to aid the pedestrian, with one performing CPR.
At least seven to eight others were hospitalized, mostly with minor injuries, including the driver (who is also in his 70s) and possibly a 6-month-old infant in one of the affected vehicles.
Suspected Cause:
Hillside Police Chief Dan Murphy stated that authorities believe the driver experienced a medical episode or incident, leading to loss of control. This is under investigation, and no criminal intent has been suggested.
Sources:
ABC7 Chicago: Reported the pedestrian as a 78-year-old man struck in the Walgreens lot.
FOX 32 Chicago: Described the chain of crashes starting with the police vehicle.
NBC Chicago: Noted seven hospitalizations, including the officers and driver.
This appears to be a non-intentional accident linked to a medical emergency. The area was chaotic, with witnesses describing the vehicle slowly “crunching” through cars before the fatal strike. Investigation is ongoing.
