At the sound of shooting, the public went to shelter and covered behind cars, benches, and ran indoors nearby buildings Bondi Pavilion, a pub, and the Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club building located in vicinity. Reports from ABC News and witness accounts noted there were several people laying on the ground motionless and some of them were bleeding. Police directed everyone in the area to seek shelter. The shooters continued to aim at several remaining visible members of the public. A civilian approached one of the gunmen from the back and disarmed him and took the gun; however, the gunman walked to a nearby bridge and got another gun and continued to shoot. The two shooters were subsequently approached by police, one of the gunmen was shot by police and died, while another one was also shot and was in critical but stable condition.

Among the injured people, two people were from the police. Further reports noted that one of the shooters told his mum that he was going fishing to Jervis Bay, was not highly sociable, and was not violent previously. Mum said he was telling her just on Sunday morning that he went diving and was going to stay home for most of the day, saying “Mum, I just went for a swim. I went scuba diving. We’re going … to eat now, and then this morning, and we’re going to stay home now because it’s very hot.”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese disapproved the shooting and praised the civilians help, noting “There is no place for this hate, violence and terrorism in this nation. Let me be clear, we will eradicate it. We have seen Australians today run towards danger to help others.”, calling it an instance of ” evil antisemitism”. The President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, described the event as a ‘cruel’ attack.

The area remained closed for further investigation as the police were checking for suspected explosives, having found two objects described as “improvised explosives” at nearby street called Campbell Parade.
