In her first public address since assuming the role of MI6 chief, Blaise Metreweli warned on Monday that the United Kingdom and its allies are “operating in a space between peace and war.” Speaking from the agency’s headquarters in London, Metreweli highlighted the evolving nature of global threats, particularly from Russia.
Metreweli stated that the “front line is everywhere,” describing a security landscape where state actors utilize tactics falling short of open conflict to destabilize adversaries. She pointed to a range of “aggressive” activities attributed to Russian intelligence, including sabotage operations and the disruption of critical infrastructure, such as drones buzzing airports.
“We are seeing a concerted effort to subjugate Ukraine and harass NATO members,” Metreweli said. She accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of deliberately delaying peace negotiations regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine, suggesting that Moscow intends to prolong the conflict to exhaust Western support.
The intelligence chief’s remarks underscored the “multi-faceted” nature of modern espionage and conflict. Unlike traditional warfare, this “grey zone” activity blurs the lines between civilian and military targets.
Metreweli, who took over as “C” earlier this year, used the platform to outline her vision for the agency in countering these hybrid threats.
