The validity of this article as a news story is, as written, disputed. Wikinews does not publish reports on events that are not sufficiently recent. For synthesis, new details must have come to light within the past five to seven days, and the news event itself must have happened within ten days. Unless sources can be found and a news event chosen to bring this article into compliance with those requirements, the article may be deleted. If any new details from the last five to seven days are newsworthy in their own right then an article could be written with these updates as the actual news event. Exceptions are possible where original reporting adds significant new and newsworthy information to the article.

Lewis Capaldi, the singer behind the 2018 song “Someone You Loved,” has returned to music with a new song, “Survive.” The song was released last week, on Friday, June 27, and unlike his previous releases, which got low ratings from the general public, this new song is quite well-received. His 2018 song, “Someone You Loved,” was a number-one single in several countries, including the United States, where it reached #1 on Billboard Hot 100 in November 2019. The official music video, which premiered in late August 2019, has over one billion views on YouTube; as of 6:46 a.m. EDT (10:46 UTC), it currently sits at 1,067,777,643 views. Unfortunately, the song was panned by critics and audience alike. On Album of the Year, it has a user score of 24% based on 345 user ratings. Right around the time this song was growing popular in the United States, he released “Before You Go” on November 19, 2019. Although this song scored a lot better than “Someone You Loved,” it still scored only 45%, which is less than half, based on 85 user ratings. Three years later, in September 2022, he released “Forget Me,” followed in the next seven months by “Pointless,” “How I’m Feeling Now,” and “Wish You The Best,” the last of those being released in April 2023. All four of these songs have more than 30 user ratings on Album of the Year, and none of these songs are higher than 50%.
Prior to last week’s release, Lewis Capaldi’s only song, disregarding any song with fewer than ten user ratings due to large variance in small samples, to score above half was “Bruises,” released in June 2017 with 59% from 13 user ratings. Now, Lewis Capaldi has broken his personal record by a wide margin, with his new song, “Survive,” getting 71% based on 36 user ratings. This is also his first song in eight years to score above half.
On November 28, 2019, popular YouTuber and music reviewer Todd in the Shadows gave an angry review of “Someone You Loved.” Or, more specifically, in Todd’s words, an “old-school, shouty angry review.” Todd hates the song with a passion. This song, in Todd’s words, puts him in “a real bad mood,” limiting his ability to tip well and causing him to honk more at other drivers. Todd finds Capaldi’s vocals in this song to be unbearable. Both he and many others have found Capaldi’s vocals to be high-pitched and piercing, especially in the chorus and bridge. It doesn’t help the song’s case that it uses the four-chord structure. In this song, the sequence F – C – C# – A# plays throughout the entire song. Three weeks later, on December 22, Todd ranked “Someone You Loved” as the fourth worst hit song of 2019. On December 23, 2020, when he ranked the worst hit songs of 2020, “Before You Go” was in the “Dishonorable Mentions” category, but Todd gave it credit for being better than “Someone You Loved.”
Whether this new song, “Survive,” will take off and become popular remains to be seen. As of now, the song is six days old, and the official music video has 2,686,733 views as of 7:00 a.m. EDT (11:00 UTC). In the table below, all times are in Eastern Time. Last night, during the “new hit playlist” daily event, radio station Kiss 108 in Boston, Massachusetts, played “Survive” at 11:01:23 p.m. Eastern Time. A miracle happened! Let’s hope this is indicative of a positive trend and not just a one-time fluke.
Another major miracle involving a singer breaking a personal record by a considerable margin was when Charlie Puth went from “Marvin Gaye” (2015) (13%, 226 user ratings) to “Attention” (2017) (75%, 159 user ratings) in two years. Not only are the two songs “night and day” in terms of user reception, but they are also night and day in terms of Todd’s rankings. In 2015, “Marvin Gaye” was #1 on the “worst hit songs” list, but two years later, in 2017, “Attention” was #3 on the “best hit songs” list. And even Todd deems this to be a miracle and attributes it to mad science. He said, “The divide between Charlie Puth in 2015 and Charlie Puth in 2017 is so bizarre and extreme that mad science is the only explanation I can think of.” And it didn’t stop there. After this, Charlie released “How Long” and “The Way I Am,” both of which reach the 80s in terms of user score.
