Joseph, whose name has been changed to protect his identity, is among a growing number of children being drawn into gangs in Haiti. The Caribbean nation is grappling with severe, interconnected crises in security, humanitarian aid, and governance.
Gang violence has displaced approximately 1.4 million people, with thousands more losing their lives. A new report from the UN in Haiti is emphasizing the urgent need for stronger child protection measures in communities affected by gang activity.
Joseph shared his harrowing experience of life within a gang:
“I grew up in a poor neighborhood where gangs were in control. Armed men were a constant presence on the streets. Some were well-dressed, drove nice cars, and were often seen with women. They dictated the rules in our area. For us children, this was the norm. Opportunities for sports or recreation were scarce, and there was little hope for the future.”
“One day, towards the end of August 2024, I was with a friend who revealed he was part of a gang. He spoke about the benefits the gang offered, such as money and a sense of importance, and encouraged me to join. Despite knowing the dangers, I decided to try it.”
Forced into Conflict
Soon after joining, Joseph was given a radio to monitor police movements and report back to the gang. He was then handed a firearm by the gang leader.
Facing rumors of an impending major police operation, Joseph was instructed to fight the police. Terrified of being killed, he expressed his desire to leave to the gang leader. In response, the leader became enraged, striking Joseph repeatedly with the weapon until his hand was broken. He was then threatened with death if he attempted to leave.
Although fearful of confronting the police, Joseph managed to escape shortly after the assault. A community member connected him with an organization that provided medical care and support. He reached out to them in September 2024 and has since been receiving counseling and support to help him cope with his traumatic experience.”
