The United Nations has condemned recent large-scale drone and missile attacks across Ukraine, which damaged dozens of residential buildings in Kyiv and surrounding regions, including Kirovohradska, Kyivska, and Vinnytska oblasts. The attacks also caused power outages for approximately 40,000 families in Odesa and disrupted power supply for around 20,000 families and businesses in Poltava due to damage to gas facilities. UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that any strike against civilians or civilian infrastructure is “unacceptable and unjustifiable.” Humanitarian partners provided materials for basic repairs and first aid, and nearly 7,000 people were evacuated from frontline areas in eastern Ukraine during January.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported a significant increase in migrant deaths in 2025, with an average of 21 migrants dying or going missing daily. A total of at least 7,667 people died or went missing while attempting to migrate last year, highlighting the urgent need for global action against smuggling networks. Sea crossings, particularly the Mediterranean and the route toward the Canary Islands, remain among the deadliest. The IOM data indicates that the actual death toll is likely higher due to unverified disappearances and unidentified remains washing ashore. The agency urged governments to enhance search-and-rescue operations, strengthen international cooperation, and expand safe migration pathways.
In southeastern Brazil, heavy rains in Minas Gerais state have led to loss of life, displacement, and significant damage. Record rainfall caused floods that displaced over 3,500 people in Juiz de Fora, Matias Barbosa, and Ubá. The IOM is supporting authorities in response efforts, providing essential relief items and technical support for shelter management. The agency has been active in Minas Gerais since 2019, working on migrant integration and voluntary return programs. IOM also supported flood response efforts in Rio Grande do Sul in 2024.
