The United States military killed eight people in strikes on three vessels in the Eastern Pacific today. United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) stated the boats were engaged in “narco-trafficking”.

The strikes occurred on three separate boats in the region. According to SOUTHCOM, the vessels were targeted as part of counter-narcotics operations.

The incident comes as the United States increases its military presence in Trinidad and Tobago. Tensions in the region have risen recently; Venezuela recently accused Trinidad and Tobago of participating in the US seizure of an oil tanker.

In a related escalation of rhetoric regarding the “drug war”, US President Donald Trump branded fentanyl a “weapon of mass destruction” earlier today.
