The UN Security Council convened to discuss the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, which has been overshadowed by broader regional developments. The meeting was requested by ten elected members concerned about the escalating crisis. This discussion comes at a time when the ceasefire that had been in effect since October 2025 has effectively ended.
Since the cessation of the ceasefire, approximately 1,000 Palestinians have lost their lives, and a significant majority of Gaza’s population has been displaced from their homes.
Aid chief Tom Fletcher addressed the ambassadors, stating that the “fragile gains” achieved after the ceasefire are the bare minimum of what Palestinians require.
