As the FIFA 2026 World Cup unfolds across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, off-field factors impacting team performance are drawing attention. Among these is the potential effect of the local food environment in the U.S. on elite athletes, as highlighted by a nutrition coach.

The coach pointed to unfamiliar diets, lengthy ingredient lists, and sudden dietary changes as potential disruptors to recovery and performance levels. In a video shared on Instagram, nutritionist Craig stated, “I’m in America for the World Cup and the food here has shocked me. Too many extra calories, too many additives, and hidden ingredient lists. Now, all these national teams have come from all over the world. They will be here for at least two to three weeks, and the food quality will definitely shock them. It can be very costly for an elite athlete.”

Craig explained that dietary changes can alter gut microbiota rapidly, sometimes within days. This can lead to bloating, digestive discomfort, and sleep disturbances – issues athletes aim to avoid during high-intensity tournaments like the World Cup. While top national teams often arrive with highly customized nutrition plans and support staff, others may face a less seamless adjustment once competition begins.

Addressing other off-field challenges, Craig noted, “Homesickness can destroy appetite. Unfamiliar foods can cause gut issues, and poor sleep makes everything worse. If a player isn’t getting enough energy and can’t recover properly, it will affect their performance. The best teams in this tournament will not just be the most talented. They will be the most prepared in every aspect.”

He emphasized that nutrition at this level is often underestimated, calling it a “secret weapon.”
