Human Rights Council-appointed experts have issued a stark warning regarding the “continuing violence of patriarchal power systems” as revealed in the Epstein files, a collection of documents the US Department of Justice began releasing late last year. These documents, which include extensive details related to the investigations into the deceased financier and child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, have ignited significant legal and political debate.
Transparent Investigation Urged
“We are gravely concerned by the credible allegations in the ‘Epstein files’ of systemic trafficking of young women and girls for purposes of sexual exploitation and call for a full and transparent investigation,” stated the two experts. The allegations reportedly implicate high-profile figures, including senior politicians, diplomats, global business leaders, and leading academics, detailing decades of widespread trafficking of girls and young women across international borders.
Siobhán Mullally, Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, especially women and children, and the five members of the Working Group on discrimination against women and girls, highlighted that the situation underscores entrenched discrimination and violence inherent in patriarchal power systems, coupled with failures in accountability.
The experts stressed that the trafficking of children and young women constitutes a serious criminal offense and a grave violation of human rights. They expressed deep concern over what they described as the “wholly inadequate” response from national governments and law enforcement authorities.
Addressing a Culture of Impunity
“The failure to ensure accountability perpetuates a culture of impunity that disproportionately harms women and girls and undermines the promise of equal protection under international human rights law,” the independent experts’ statement read. They further emphasized that trafficking of children for sexual exploitation irrevocably damages childhoods and leads to devastating long-term consequences for victims.
Governments were reminded of their fundamental obligations to prevent trafficking, protect victims, and ensure access to justice and effective remedies, including compensation.
Centering Victims and Survivors
“Victims and survivors must be at the centre of effective trauma-informed and gender-sensitive responses to trafficking in persons,” the experts asserted. They called for guarantees of medical assistance, including reproductive and sexual health services, psychosocial support, and long-term social inclusion and recovery measures for survivors.
Action is “Long Overdue”
As global attention to the case potentially wanes, the experts have urged concrete action, accountability, and immediate measures to guarantee access to justice, reparations, non-repetition, and transparency. “States bear the obligation to act, and that obligation is long overdue,” they concluded.
It was noted that all independently appointed experts receive their mandates from the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. They serve in an independent capacity, are not UN staff, and do not receive payment for their work.
