United Nations Headquarters in New York hosted a commemoration of International Women’s Day, bringing together leaders, advocates, and youth voices. The event preceded the opening of the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70), recognized as the UN’s largest annual forum dedicated to gender equality.
The central theme emphasized was “Rights, Justice, Action,” with speakers underscoring the urgent need for enhanced measures to guarantee women and girls worldwide can fully access justice and enjoy equal rights.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted significant legal inequalities, stating that women globally possess only 64 percent of the legal rights afforded to men. He called upon nations to dismantle discriminatory legislation and safeguard hard-won advancements.
The event saw high-profile participation, including actress Anne Hathaway, alongside global leaders and advocates. A musical performance by Michelle Williams was also featured.
Particular attention was given to the situation in Afghanistan. Malala Yousafzai issued a warning regarding the marginalization of women and girls from public life under Taliban rule. Afghan student Sunbul Reha appealed to leaders to safeguard girls’ right to education, emphasizing that millions of girls are depending on the international community’s intervention.
The UN’s Gender Equality Acceleration Plan aims to pivot the United Nations toward more effective delivery for women and girls.
