United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk announced the establishment of a new global alliance in Geneva, aimed at combating escalating threats worldwide. Türk described the initiative as a direct response to the “chaotic” global situation, designed to channel the energy of people seeking change.
Towards a More Just World
“The vast majority of people in the world want a better world; a more just, more equitable world. Human rights are part of who they are. It is part of our DNA,” stated Volker Türk.
The alliance seeks to unite a broad spectrum of actors, including governments, civil society organizations, businesses, cities, faith leaders, artists, academics, and youth. A common framework based on the principles of imagine, dialogue, act will form the foundation of this collaboration.
According to a concept note released by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the human rights system is under “unprecedented pressure.” The note highlights that violations often go unpunished, the civic space is shrinking, some states are retreating from multilateral commitments, and a severe funding deficit threatens the broader ecosystem.
Concrete Steps Underway
Several concrete initiatives are set to launch this month, including the Global Desk for Business and Human Rights, a RightsX Summit focusing on digital innovation, and the Human Rights Everywhere Program aimed at integrating rights education in schools.
Türk also set an ambitious target to expand the existing network of 104 “human rights cities” to 1,000 globally.
Addressing reparations and accountability, Türk emphasized, “One of the most important things is to give voice to victims of human rights violations and conflicts,” citing civilians affected by wars in Ukraine, Gaza, Lebanon, Myanmar, Sudan, and Haiti.
Significant Responsibilities
Türk drew attention to the increasing power of major technology companies, stressing that human rights must serve as both a guide and a regulatory framework when immense financial and political power is wielded.
The alliance is structured as a long-term endeavor rather than a one-off campaign. A three-year milestone is planned to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on December 10, 2028.
The Global Alliance for Human Rights Forum, to be held annually on this date, will monitor progress and set priorities.
Türk noted that Geneva was chosen as a natural hub for this initiative due to the concentration of human rights institutions, but emphasized that the alliance would “have a home wherever human rights are discussed.”
