The United Nations Human Rights Chief has stated that United States sanctions against Cuba have brought the nation to the brink of economic collapse, resulting in the deaths of children. The official expressed concerns regarding the humanitarian consequences of these sanctions.
In a statement, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights emphasized that U.S. economic sanctions severely restrict access to healthcare and essential necessities in Cuba. This situation has a devastating impact, particularly on vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly.
The High Commissioner stated, “The sanctions prevent the entry of essential goods such as food, medicine, and medical supplies into the country. This situation is causing an increase in child mortality and depriving the population of their fundamental human rights.” He also called for the lifting or easing of sanctions, urging that the Cuban people be rescued from the humanitarian crisis.
The UN official called on the international community to be sensitive to the situation in Cuba and to provide humanitarian aid. He noted that the sanctions have gone beyond their intended purpose, endangering the lives of innocent civilians.
