The tremor, recorded at 08:43 AM local time, originated in the municipality of Manabo, Abra province, on the island of Luzon. With a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, the earthquake’s impact was felt intensely on the surface.
The seismic event was felt in various parts of the country, including the capital, Manila. In Abra province, buildings collapsed, roads were damaged, and power outages occurred. Initial reports from local hospitals indicate that at least 4 people have died and over 60 have been injured. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with concerns that the death toll may rise.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has warned of expected aftershocks in the affected area. Authorities are urging the public to stay away from damaged structures and remain vigilant for subsequent tremors.
